Square Enix is set to diversify the party shooter scene with the release of Foamstars, launching February 6, 2024, on PS4 and PS5. This title marks a significant attempt to emulate the family-friendly, third-person shooter style popularized by Splatoon, but with a unique twist. Instead of squid kids and ink, players control anime-inspired characters engaging in vibrant foam battles. Available for free to PlayStation Plus subscribers with an Essential or higher level subscription, Foamstars aims to provide an accessible and engaging multiplayer experience.

The game was first introduced in an Announce Trailer during the PlayStation Showcase in May 2023, setting expectations with its dramatic introduction that shifts into a colorful, neon-lit cityscape filled with foam-firing action. Unlike Splatoon, Foamstars focuses on four-on-four matches where teams use foam to create environmental changes, such as cover and obstacles, adding a layer of strategy to the fast-paced gameplay.

Each character comes equipped with unique weapons and abilities, including shotguns and pistols, complemented by two abilities and an ultimate. The gameplay revolves around chilling opponents with foam until they're trapped in a soap bubble, introducing a rescue mechanic that encourages teamwork. The primary mode detailed so far is "Star Rush," where teams compete to chill the opposing team's star player.

As Square Enix ventures into the competitive party shooter market with Foamstars, it remains to be seen whether the game will stand as a mere clone of its predecessors or carve out its niche. With its free launch on PlayStation Plus and no pre-order option, the game is poised for immediate accessibility, inviting players to dive into its foam-filled battles upon release.
